An open letter recruiting Kirk Cousins to play for the New York Jets.

We know the situation here with the New York Jets. They need a quarterback. Now that Alex Smith has been acquired by the Redskins, Kirk Cousins will be available to sign as a free agent. Cousins is, by far, the best quarterback we have seen on the open market in many years. The Jets have the chance to bring in the best quarterback this fan base has seen in far too many years. You certainly know my feelings on the matter by now.

Cousins will have multiple teams interested in his services for 2018 and beyond. Judging by the fact that he had glowing remarks about Jeremy Bates, it is safe to say that Cousins is taking his time and doing his research. He is going to put himself in what he feels is the best situation for him, as he should.

More from Empire Writes Back

So, this morning it seemed high time to send Cousins a letter. OK, I am not really going to send it. I am going to publish it, maybe he will see it. The following is how I would write a recruitment letter to Cousins to hopefully convince him to come and join the Jets. An open letter from a fan, if you will.

Dear Mr. Cousins,

It is nice to talk to you, even through a good old-fashioned letter. Congratulations to you on your three straight 4,000 yard passing seasons. Even in the passing league the NFL is now that is still an accomplishment.

Sorry things didn’t work out in Washington for you, it never is easy to move your family to a new location, even as an athlete. With that, however, comes the opportunity to choose between several teams to continue your career. It must be nice to have that type of chance.

This letter is to help convince you that the team you need to come join is the Jets.

First of all, the team will be able to give you virtually any contract you want. With what is looking like $100 million of cap space, you can sign for exactly what you are looking for and the team will have the ability to fill other holes.

I know winning is most important to you, but a big paycheck never hurt, right?

Besides money, the Jets also have three draft choices in the top 50 picks. They will be able to fill the holes and arm the team with what you need to succeed. The resources are all there.

The team also has a strong corps on offense and defense. You will love throwing to Robby Anderson, and Jermaine Kearse opens things up for him as the possession receiver. Flip the ball to Bilal Powell and watch him go. You will enjoy it. On defense, as Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye develop they will give you short fields to work with. You can make a big difference immediately upon your arrival.

The offense will need your leadership, but we in New York hear that is your reputation, Captain Kirk.

Now, you have spent your life in both rural areas and more dense areas. New Jersey can accommodate whichever makes you feel more comfortable. Whether you want the hustle and bustle of NYC or just a place that is quiet, New Jersey has it all. After all, Brett Favre agreed to come here and he is about as rural as anyone.

Last but not least, understand the impact you will have here. Kirk, you will immediately be revered. This team hasn’t seen a quarterback like you in what feels like centuries. You would already be on a pedestal. “Broadway Kirk” has a night ring to it, no? And when you finally take this team where we have all waited for it to go, you will be legend alongside the likes of Mark Messier, Joe Torre, and countless others.

Coming to New York can put a stamp on your career that nowhere else can. This is your time, please come to New York and play for the Jets. We need you.

Sincerely,

Alan Schechter
