Tim Tebow has no business at New York Mets camp or anywhere else in professional baseball.

On a personal note, there was hope that the New York Mets were going to give up on this so we wouldn’t have to talk about it. Unfortunately, this situation continues so we do discuss it. Just when Sandy was getting things on the right track, making moves like signing in-house players, as well as free agents like Adrian Gonzalez, this happens.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, headlining the list of non-roster invitees heading to Mets camp will be none other than Tim Tebow. Yep, that Tim Tebow. The failed football player that is now trying to chase his dream of being a baseball player at 30 years old.

I have been watching and rooting for the Mets for over 30 years now. In all those years, they have never made a move that was so clearly desperate, foolhardy and just plain stupid than keeping Tim Tebow around the major league team. It is a complete ploy to get attention, plain and simple, which is obsurd for a big market team.

More from Empire Writes Back

First of all, Tebow’s presence gets in the way. His existence brings attention to himself and it divides up locker rooms. Ask the New York Jets for all of the evidence you need. Mike Tannenbaum lost his job one season after signing Tebow.

He causes problems. The amount of coverage he receives takes attention away from the team. He becomes the storyline and when trying to put together a successful team, one player cannot be the entire story.

Unless of course the player is very good. So why don’t we take a look at Tebow’s baseball “credentials”.

After hitting a whopping .194 in the Arizona Fall League in 2016, for some reason Tebow was promoted to A-ball. Imagine a rookie in the minors hitting .194. We would all want that player to stay where he is. Add that name to it and it deserves a promotion?

Between two teams, Tebow hit .226 with eight home runs and 52 RBI. Again, not exactly eye popping numbers. Add his ten errors out of 114 chances and the numbers are flat-out bad. He can’t hit or play defense. But I guess if you are Tim Tebow that doesn’t matter.

Well enough is enough.

Sandy Alderson finally admitted that part of the reason for signing Tebow as entertainment. First of all, we didn’t need to be told that. A guy that doesn’t absolutely nothing except draw attention to himself is AT LEAST partially for entertainment. Thanks for that brilliant insight, Sandy.

Secondly, let’s talk about entertainment. Entertainment refers to something people would enjoy. ENJOY! Mets fans do not want to see a .200 hitter that can’t play the outfield, even if he draws some attention at the beginning. You know what would be entertaining, Sandy?
