The New York Jets firing of John Morton confirms that the young quarterbacks are out.

The New York Jets made their first real move of the offseason. We know that Todd Bowles is back for another year, but the same can’t be said for Bowles’ top offensive assistant:

Morton had his good moments with the Jets. He brought the tight end back to prominence with the team in the form of Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Morton put together offensive schemes that allowed Josh McCown to put up the best numbers of his career. Robby Anderson flourished and at times the offense did some very good things.

There were some play calling issues as well. We talked about them during the year. There is no real need to go back there. Every offensive coordinator gets too cute at times. Morton wasn’t any different, out thinking himself.

The replacement could be Bates, it could be Todd Haley (my choice), and it could be someone from outside that group we haven’t heard of. At this point there is no telling.

One thing is for sure, however. This move does guarantee one thing. If there was any thought at all that either Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg would be sticking around, it’s over. There is no way those two are coming back in 2018.

The exception is Josh McCown. We saw this season that he could come in with one offensive coordinator and immediately perform. Petty and Hackenberg, however, cannot. We know all about them already. They have been here through more than one offensive coordinator. Neither of them is anywhere near NFL starter level. Is sticking around for the third offensive coordinator of their careers going to help?

Say goodbye to the youngsters. Despite Maccagnan saying the book isn’t closed, they are gone.
