New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is currently preparing his defense for Saturday’s divisional playoff game against the Tennessee Titans. Regardless of how far the Patriots go in the playoffs, it appears as though he is the favorite to become the next head coach of the New York Giants.
On Wednesday, Pat Leonard of The New York Daily News reported that “all signs point to” Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia becoming the next head coach of the Giants.
The Giants search for a new head coach has been going on for over a week now, and it looks like they may have found their guy.
Good morning, #Giants fans. Some news: All signs are pointing to Matt Patricia, the New England Patriots defensive coordinator, as the man the Giants will hire as their next head coach https://t.co/oQCmdi3D0f

Patricia, 43, interviewed with the Giants last Friday. A former rocket scientist, he has been a coach in the Patriots organization since the 2004 season. Patricia started out as an offensive assistant and then worked his way up to assistant offensive line coach. He became the Patriots linebackers coach in 2006 and held this position until 2010. Patricia was the team’s safeties coach for one year before being promoted to defensive coordinator prior to the 2012 season.

The Patriots have won two Super Bowls during Patricia’s tenure as defensive coordinator (XLIX and LI). He has a chance to add another Super Bowl to his resume over the next few weeks. No matter what happens to the Patriots in the playoffs, however, it looks like Matt Patricia will get his first chance to be a head coach next season.
The Giants are not the only team making a big push for Patricia. It has been reported that the Detroit Lions have a lot of interest in him as well. It initially seemed as though Patricia to the Lions was a done deal, but this is clearly not the case, as Leonard pointed out in his story.
Even though Patricia is reportedly now the favorite to land the Giants’ job, they are still not done interviewing candidates. On Tuesday, Paul Schwartz of The New York Post reported that the Giants interviewed Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks for their vacant head coaching position. General manager Dave Gettleman and co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch were all present for the interview.

Besides Studesville, Wilks, and Patricia, the Giants have also completed interviews with interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, and Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.

For now, Matt Patricia appears to be the favorite. The way things have unfolded for the Giants over the past couple of weeks, however, anything can happen.
