The New York Giants hired Dave Gettleman to be their new general manager on Thursday. He now has the task of hiring a head coach, and it appears as though his search is widening.

The list of potential head-coaching candidates for the New York Giants is becoming more extensive by the day.

On Tuesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN reported that the Giants put in a request to interview Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur for their head coaching vacancy.

Shurmur, 52, took over as the offensive coordinator for the Vikings midway through the 2016 season after Norv Turner’s sudden resignation. The Vikings offense thrived under him this season, as they averaged 356.9 yards and 23.9 points per game.

If the Giants are looking for someone with previous head coaching experience, Shurmur definitely fits the bill. He was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2011-2012. Shurmur had a record of 9-23 during his tenure in Cleveland.

After an unsuccessful stint with the Browns, Shurmur became the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles under Chip Kelly. After Kelly was fired right before the last game of the 2015 season, Shurmur took over as the interim head coach. In his lone game as Philadelphia’s head coach, the Eagles beat the Giants 35-30.

Shurmur joins a growing list of potential Giants head coaching candidates. On Monday, Paul Schwartz of The New York Post reported that the Giants have asked the New England Patriots permission to interview their offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as well as their defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

Other names on Dave Gettleman’s radar reportedly include Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and former Denver Broncos running backs coach and assistant head coach Eric Studesville. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Giants plan to interview Studesville on Friday.

It appears as though Gettleman is planning on interviewing a wide range of candidates, which is definitely a good thing. It is also a good sign that he is mainly looking outside of the organization to find the next Giants head coach. The last time the Giants hired a new coach, they promoted from within. Judging by Ben McAdoo’s overall tenure as head coach, this decision did not work out in the end.
