New York Mets former right fielder Darryl Strawberry admits to some pretty wild stuff between innings.

The 1986 New York Mets were widely known as a wild bunch of guys. They were an “in your face” type of team. They won a lot and weren’t shy about telling you about it. They ended up in four bench-clearing brawls that season. Off the field they were a bunch of partiers. The team could be seen at the bar after almost every game.

It turns out that the off the field met the on the field every once in a while. Darryl Strawberry has been recovering from his own problems with drugs and alcohol. He is a born again Christian and has rebuilt is life quite well. Back then, however, he tried some interesting things.

Darryl recently went on the Dr. Oz show and talked about how locker room attendants at Shea Stadium went into the crowd to find interested ladies to come to the clubhouse and have sex with Strawberry between innings (via the NY Post). According to the former right fielder, coaches and players would cover for him:

"“Some of them covered for me,” he said of the players and staffers. “They were pretty cool.”"

When learning of this, I privately wondered how that worked out if the Mets went down 1-2-3 in the particular inning that this was set up. Quick is quick but, wow! Sorry, just a personal aside.

If someone has an addictive personality, they must feed the addiction wherever they can. It’s why that a drug addict can be found almost anywhere looking for a score. They need it so badly that they must get it wherever they can.

This is the concept we are looking at when talking about Darryl Strawberry. Back in the 80s it wasn’t taken as seriously as it is now. Now the Mets would be accused of enabling Strawberry but back then it was par for the course. Teams would cover for their players transgressions.

It’s what was done.

Next: Fred Wilpon is completely out of touch

These days he would have been sent to rehab in the middle of the season if needed. Teams don’t brush things under the rug as much as they did back then. Kudos to Strawberry for recognizing the problems within him and working to fix them. He will be a much better player and man for it.
