New York Jets: Three keys to victory against the Denver Broncos
Employ an Effective Screen Game
Against a team like Denver this is ultra important. The pass rush will be something the Jets have to contend with. Count on it. Denver is going to play to their strengths. They are at their most effective when they get after the quarterback. It makes the secondary cover for a shorter amount of time. Sacks end up giving their offense a shorter field, which is necessary the way they have played this year. They will get after Josh McCown and there is no doubt about it.
How do you slow down a pass rush? Throw screen passes over their heads, that’s how. Let the pass rush get in there, lift a pass over their heads and watch them chase after your teammate. It was very encouraging to see Matt Forte used more often in the passing game last week. This week, Bilal Powell, Elijah McGuire and/or Matt Forte can take some screen passes for big plays, forcing Von Miller and company to stay at home rather than sell out on the all out rush.
If the Jets really want to get creative, this would be a good spot to feature more of ArDarius Stewart than they have all season so far. For one, it would be nice to see what they have in their young rookie. His skill set also plays well into a game plan like this one. He is very conducive to “Jet Sweeps”, screen passes, and other quick plays of that nature. It would slow the pass rush down and show the Broncos something they haven’t seen much on film.
