Despite an unimpressive game overall, the New York Knicks at least showed that they are in a better position than the Orlando Magic moving forward.

Meh. One word that sums up the entire mediocre evening of basketball between the New York Knicks and Orlando Magic.

Kyle O’Quinn’s revenge game was highly underwhelming. Doug McDermott didn’t thrive with the extra shots. Long story short, Knicks lose by five going down to the wire without their top two scorers playing … proving what? That we had this game in the bag? That our reserves can’t step up when needed? … meh.

Look, Knick fans have no other way to measure their success except for comparing to other teams: their prospects, their contracts, their established players, and their picks and assets.

There was a long stretch of time not too long ago when it was tough to find a team with less to offer than the Knicks. And it hurt …

But now, there is a silver lining …

More from New York Knicks

Look at Orlando: they are run of the mill, still average after all these years. They have Aaron Gordon who is a young star (although definitely not a superstar) in the making, they have Elfrid Payton who despite his alluring attributes, has enough downside (besides his hair!) to be also just mediocre … they have an established center in Nikola Vucevic and established shooting guard in Evan Fournier. All that combined adds up to zero title runs with zero on the horizon. You know what’s missing?

A superstar … a Kristaps Porzingis.

And we have him. For once, an enigmatic, generational big man with uncanny skills, plays for the New York Knicks. There are few players in today’s league that can compare in their eclectic skill set, and even fewer who are before their primes: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Karl-Anthony Towns, DeMarcus Cousins, Kawhi Leonard, Ben Simmons, and Anthony Davis if you are okay with your franchise player constantly injured.

The picture isn’t clear yet, but when watching this ‘meh’ game, one thing was clear, the New York Knicks have more of a future than the Orlando Magic. Now that is progress.
