Time to Address the Offensive Line

This was another game that we learned that my friend Joe Caporoso from Turn on the Jets is dead-on with his assessment. In a recent podcast he talked about the fact that the team hasn’t addressed the premium offensive line positions in years, instead building with offensive guards. That is exactly what they have been doing and it needs to stop. They need to address premium offensive line positions, namely offensive tackle.

Look at how things turned out on Sunday against the Chiefs. Yes, they ran the ball better, netting 157 yards of run offense. But they averaged 3.2 yards per carry. The leader (Matt Forte) ran for a grand total of 58 yards. Hardly the performance that makes you think of the word “dominance”. Part of that is on the backs, but part of that is on the line. If they aren’t opening holes the backs have nowhere to go.

How have things worked out since D’Brickashaw Ferguson retired? Ryan Clady gave things a shot, though you might not even remember his name because he was so often injured. Now Kelvin Beachum sits at left tackle, but he comes in currently as the 42nd best tackle in the league (per Pro Football Focus). Is anyone really confident in him? Didn’t think so. It’s another week down and more proof that the Jets must address the offensive line.
