Geno Smith is exactly what we thought he was
By Sean Dyer
For some reason, Ben McAdoo wanted to get a look at Geno Smith as his starting quarterback. Apparently, his time with the New York Jets wasn’t enough for McAdoo. Geno, however, is exactly what we thought he was.
Geno Smith is not a starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL. He’s just not. Did anyone expect much from him on Sunday against the Raiders? I think that most people expected to see exactly what we saw.
Smith was 21-34 for 212 yards, one touchdown, and turned the ball over twice, losing fumbles two of the three times he was sacked. He cannot lead an offense and is prone to turnovers. The only thing Geno can do that Eli can’t is get outside the pocket and pick up yards with his legs. Smith picked up 13 yards on the day.
As a passer, however, Geno is simply not good. There were multiple occasions throughout the game where Geno had pre-determined where he was going to throw the ball instead of going through his progression and he missed wide open receivers.
As expected, the Giants lost to the Raiders 24-17. Geno Smith showed no signs of being the Giants quarterback of the present or future while Eli Manning sat on the sideline helpless.
Congratulations, Ben McAdoo. You benched an all-time great for a below average quarterback who has never shown any NFL promise.

The sad part is, this was a winnable game for the Giants. I understand that most fans don’t want New York to win and ruin their shot at a top draft pick. However, watching Eli Manning lose was much more bearable than watching Geno Smith lose. Even watching Davis Webb lose could provide encouraging signs. Instead, McAdoo left us fans with 60 minutes of disappointment.
The positives of the day? The San Francisco 49ers picked up a victory in the first game of the Jimmy Garoppolo era, so the New York Giants are now in position to pick second overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Evan Engram had a big day, hauling in seven catches for 99 yards and a touchdown. Sterling Shepard returned after battling migraines and caught three passes for 56 yards.

And most importantly, maybe, just maybe, this bone-headed decision to start Geno Smith will get Ben McAdoo fired on Monday. We can only hope.
