With the news that Eli Manning would be benched in order to evaluate Geno Smith and Davis Webb, there are many questions being asked. The most intriguing of which is whether or not Eli Manning will see the field as a New York Giant ever again.

The New York Giants shocked the NFL and Sports worlds yesterday when they announced that they would be starting Geno Smith at quarterback Sunday afternoon against the Raiders. So does that mean that the Eli Manning era in New York is over?

There are many ways of looking at this and personally I don’t believe he is done as a Giant. Manning is 36 and that means that he is towards the end of his career. With that being said the Giants must look at possible replacements for the all-time great when he is done, and there is no better time than now to look at possible replacements.

The Giants are 2-9 and are eliminated from playoff contention which means these next five games are meaningless, so why not evaluate other players, and get a better draft pick in the process? The benching of Manning for five meaningless games really does not mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

Geno Smith and Davis Webb will both be playing just to see if they need to take a quarterback in the 2018 draft. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the Eli era is over, but it also does not mean that he will be the quarterback next year, no questions asked.

Next: Who will be the Giants quarterback in 2018?

Over these next five games the Giants will see what they have, see what they need and go from there. It is not only Manning who is being put to the side to see what other players have. Both Ben McAdoo and Jerry Reese said that they would be evaluating every position in order to better prepare themselves for the future.

The Manning era is not over in New York, the Giants are simply a 2-9 football team looking for ways to improve so they don’t start 2-9 again anytime soon. But who’s to say Eli Manning is disgusted with this situation and wants to go to a team that wants him?
