New York Giants: Fire Ben McAdoo and Jerry Reese, not Eli Manning

The New York Giants are benching quarterback Eli Manning but it’s head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese who should be benched.

Ben McAdoo and Jerry Reese starting Geno Smith at quarterback in Week 13 just proves why these two need to be fired after this season. Not only is this disrespectful to the greatest New York Giants quarterback to ever wear the uniform, but it just shows how they have zero grip on the future of this franchise.

McAdoo and Reese have the luxury of playing out the year and having their evaluations take place after the season. So should Eli. The fact that this thought was even on their minds is crazy. The fact that they actually went through with it is insane.

Anyone with two eyes who has watched any football in their life knows that Eli Manning is not the problem for this football team. Yes, Eli makes some brutal decisions and sometimes may look like he throws the ball blindly. But he still can flare his TWO Super Bowl rings.

And he’s being benched for who? GENO SMITH? In five years, Geno Smith will end up being a journeyman backup. To not consider right off the bat going to their hopeful heir Davis Webb just doesn’t make sense. And if he is still not ready, then you continue to play Eli. You take as much time for Webb to be ready as needed but you do not play Geno Smith.

More from New York Giants

The Giants do not have a reputation for changing around quarterbacks in a season like the Jets or Browns. Just like how McAdoo and Reese will keep their jobs through the season, so should Eli.

Obviously, the New York Giants season isn’t going anywhere and this is an effort to see the future. But Geno Smith was a second-round pick who showed flashes as a Jet. In the end, though, Smith just can’t be trusted to hold the reins of a franchise.

Let Webb go through the ups and the downs of these last six games. Let him feel the pressure and see if he can handle a locker room. See if he can stand in the pocket and deliver a strike under heavy pressure. As much as you need to protect a young quarterback, if you’re planning on tanking a season (like it seems the Giants are aiming to do), then go with the guy who is hopefully your future.

Do not forget the disrespect that this organization has just shown their most accomplished gunslinger. This man has a 210 consecutive start streak all in New York Giants blue. Eli Manning has been nothing but class to this organization and the league. No. 10 deserved to be treated better than this.
