1. Edgardo Alfonzo

Alfonzo actually spent a great deal of time at third base as well, but he spent enough time at second base to have played the fourth-most games in team history at second with 524. Alfonzo came up in 1995 but didn’t spent much time at second base that year. In 1996 he spent 66 games at second with a fielding percentage of .974. Alfonzo went back to third base, returning in 1999 and staying through 2001. In 1999 he peaked with a .993 fielding percentage. It stayed over .980 for the next two years as well.

“Fonzie” was a talented offensive player and a clutch one as well. In eight years with the Mets he hit .292. His best season came in his All-Star season of 2000 when he hit .324 with 25 home runs and 94 RBI. The year prior was Alfonzo’s best year in the power department, with 27 home runs with 108 RBI. He was twice in the top-ten in batting average, 1997 with a .315 average and in 2002 with a .308. Alfonzo was a complete player extrordinairre.

Alfonzo was clutch in the playoffs. Remember the Wild Card game against the Reds back in 1999? Alfonzo’s two-run homer was all the Mets needed in Al Leiter’s complete game shutout. In the next series against the Diamondbacks, he hit two home runs including a grand slam to propel the Mets to another victory. His clutch play continued in 2000, helping the Mets to the Subway Series against the Yankees.

Alfonzo is number one on this list, and with good reason.
