New York Mets: Top three players to wear the number one
1. Mookie Wilson
The number one position is reserved for the only one that could wear it. William Hayward “Mookie” Wilson was a homegrown Met, drafted by the team in the second round of the 1977 draft. He made his debut in 1980 under then manager Joe Torre. Yes kids, THAT Joe Torre. He became a regular player in 1982 when he played in 159 games. He was known for his speed, and this was his best year in that regard, posting 58 stolen bases.
The 58 steals was a single-season record for the team and in 1984 he became the All-Time steals leader for the Mets. (He has since been passed in both by Jose Reyes.) For his career, he posted 1,112 hits and a .276 batting average. He doubled 62 times and tripled 60 times. However, he will be forever in the hearts of Mets fans for 1986. He jumped out of the way of the wild pitch and hit the grounder to Bill Buckner that was drove fans to the brink of insanity. It was game six, and you all know what happened. Mets win, then win the next one and they are champs.

Mookie was with the Mets from his debut through half of 1989. He continued solid play for most of his time in New York. For all of the hustle, the runs, the steals and the memories, he is well-deserving of this number one position. Do you agree, Mets fans? Sound off in the comments.
