Who are the five best catchers in New York Mets history?

The New York Mets, since the very beginning, have been built around pitching. From the early days of Tom Seaver coming into town to win a championship, to the 80’s and the Doctor, right up until today with Thor and company, the Mets have been a team of pitching and defense. They did this in part because Shea Stadium and Citi Field are bigger ballparks. They lend towards a team with better pitching. Be that as it may, this is what the Mets have been through the years.

What do great pitchers need to succeed? A great coach, yes, but what about on the field? On the field, they are coached by their catcher. We have seen pitchers that will only throw to specific catchers, that’s how important the relationship is. A quality catcher can keep a young staff together and keep them focused. A catcher that doesn’t have that ability will not be able to get the most out of his pitchers. A great battery mate is essential for any great pitcher.

Luckily for the Mets, they have had a history of talented catchers as well. But who are the best in franchise history? Well we are going to enumerate the top five this afternoon. Some have won championships, some have not. But all five of them have gotten the most that they can out of very talented pitchers they have caught. Let’s get to the list.
