Designated Hitter

Matt Holliday is a free agent and has left an opening at designated hitter for the New York Yankees.

Will Holliday be re-signed? Will the Yankees bring in a new DH? Do the Yankees even need one player assigned to the DH spot?

I would argue that it’s in New York’s best interest to rotate players at designated hitter. With their surplus of outfielders and the imminent promotion of Gleyber Torres, the Yankees will have too much talent to tie up one position with just one player.

Brian Cashman could very easily disagree, however. If the Yankees are looking to have a permanent DH in 2018, they’ll need to make a move with Holliday hitting free agency.

The level of necessity to bring in a designated hitter will depend on whether or not the New York Yankees plan to have a permanent DH in 2018.

The New York Yankees don’t have a ton of needs this offseason. They have a loaded bullpen, a homegrown ace, and a young lineup that exceeded expectations in 2017.

If the Yankees can fill these holes, however, they could be looking at even longer postseason runs in 2018 and beyond.
