Luis Severino Is the Ace the New York Yankees Have Been Waiting For

The New York Yankees have been searching for a homegrown ace since Andy Pettitte. They may have finally found one in Luis Severino.

Severino had an All-Star season and will likely finish in the top five of the AL Cy Young voting. He went 14-6 with a 2.98 ERA and struck out 230 batters in 193.1 innings.

Sevy delivered a clunker in the AL Wild Card Game, going just 0.1 innings while giving up three runs but he bounced back in his next playoff start. In his ALDS start, Severino went seven innings giving up three runs and striking out nine.

More from New York Yankees

Severino struggled as a starter in 2016. He posted an 8.50 ERA as a starter before being moved to the bullpen. Sevy put up a 0.39 ERA in 23.1 innings as a reliever and it seemed like the bullpen was his destiny.

Everyone was writing off Severino as another failed starter who would spend his career as a reliever. Severino, however, had other ideas.

Sevy would win a starting spot in spring training this year and dominate from then on out. Luis Severino went from rotation question mark in 2017 to New York Yankees ace in 2018.

Whether Masahiro Tanaka opts out or not and no matter what New York gets out of a full season from Sonny Gray, Severino will lead the rotation next season.

Finally having a homegrown ace to rely on every time he takes the mound is encouraging for the future of the New York Yankees.
