A look at the long history between the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders.

Sunday afternoon, the New York Jets head out to the other coast to face the lethal Oakland Raiders. This is a team that is going to put many of the Jets weaknesses to the test. Derek Carr is an accurate passer with all kinds of weapons at his disposal. Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree are a tough duo for any secondary to stop. Marshawn Lynch looks like he never had time off. “Beastmode” is in full swing. The Raiders are a tough opponent.

These two teams have a long history together, going all the way back to their days in the AFL. In October of 1960, these two teams met for the first time when the Jets were still known as the Titans. The Raiders won that one 28-27. Young readers, ask your parents about the Heidi game. That’s all I will say there.

Overall, the Raiders lead the series with a 22-17-2 record. The Jets have played well lately, however, as they have taken two out of the last three meetings. Last season, Andre Holmes caught two touchdown passes and Latavius Murray added 113 yards on the ground, helping the Raiders to a 34-20 victory.

Now they have Lynch. In case anyone forgot, Lynch is better than Murray. It won’t be easy on Sunday.

More from Empire Writes Back

Let’s look at the numbers as we move into Sunday with some of the individual players.

Derek Carr has been fantastic in his career against New York. In two previous meetings, he has posted six touchdowns and zero interceptions. His passer rating is 113.8.

The last time Marshawn Lynch faced the Jets was back in 2012 with the Seahawks. He went full “Beast mode” that day, rushing for 124 yards and a touchdown.

On offense, the Jets must account for Khalil Mack. When these two teams met last November, Mack posted one sack and three TFL’s (tackles for loss). Keep him away from the football, period.

Last time Josh McCown faced the Raiders was last year for the Browns. That day he looked pretty good, throwing for 341 yards, two touchdowns and just one interception. Could this week be the week Matt Forte comes back to life? In two previous meetings with Oakland, he has posted 239 yards from scrimmage, 150 of them on the ground.

Next: Three Jets keys to victory over the Raiders

On defense, could the unlikely hero be Buster Skrine? Over his last three games against Oakland, he has recorded three pass defenses. Will that be easy on Sunday? Of course not. It’s just interesting to point out that there are players wearing green and white that have had some success against this team. It does go both ways though. We’ll see what happens on Sunday afternoon.
