New York Mets starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard has been sidelined for the majority of the season due to a torn lat muscle in his right arm. Since the injury, he has slowly made his way back and is now getting close to returning to the rotation.

It would be an understatement to say that the Mets have missed Noah Syndergaard’s presence in their starting rotation this season. Fortunately, it appears as though he is almost fully healthy once agin.

Prior to the Mets game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Thursday evening, Syndergaard threw a bullpen session. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported that the bullpen session took place.

This is a very positive sign for Syndergaard and the Mets. He is gradually starting to throw more, meaning that he is inching closer to a return.

Syndergaard being healthy again is much more important for 2018 than it is for the rest of this season. Being that it is already mid-September, there is really no point in having him rejoin the starting rotation. It will be imperative for the Mets to have Syndergaard ready to go for Opening Day next year.

That being said, there is still a chance that Syndergaard will pitch again in 2017. If he feels as though he is ready and wants to make a few starts before the end of the season, we could see him on a mound for the Mets again soon. Whether or not he returns this year will largely depend on what the Mets medical staff says.

Next: Sandy Alderson needs to go

The last time Syndergaard made a start was on April 30. He was placed on the disabled list the next day because of the torn lat muscle in his throwing arm. In the five starts he made before getting hurt, Syndergaard was 1-2 with a 3.29 ERA.

It is good that Syndergaard is making progress toward a return. Throwing a bullpen session is a major step in the recovery process. Hopefully, he will be back with the Mets soon.
