New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson should be the one on the way out, not Terry Collins.

2017 was a year of hope for the New York Mets. The pitching staff was finally back together, including Zack Wheeler, and they were ready to dominate. Yoenis Cespedes was here to stay and the Mets were going to make a run like they did in 2015. This team was ready to go.

But as we all know, that was not to be. We could write an entire article just naming all of the players that spent time on the disabled list. The 2017 Mets highlight video could be called “Injuries, Injuries and More Injuries”. Noah Syndergaard and Cespedes highlight a disabled list that blocked any chance of success in Queens.

Frankly, it is impressive that the Mets have recorded over 60 wins. For most of the 2017 season the Mets have remained competitive. 14 wins out of Jacob DeGrom haven’t hurt, of course. He would probably be at twenty wins by now on a healthy team. But there really is one name to credit with keeping this team together. His name is Terry Collins. He has kept this team fighting and working hard against deep odds against them.

So, why is there so much chatter about Terry Collins losing his job? It is unlikely that he is going to be brought back in 2018, according to reports. As I wrote about previously, that should be because Collins doesn’t want to come back. He has done more than anyone could have imagined around all of these injuries.

It’s interesting to note that there is very little chatter about Sandy Alderson and his job security. It’s just assumed that he is safe in his job until he wants to leave. That may be the case, as Fred Wilpon appears to be a loyal guy. We don’t hear from him very often but that is how we judge his actions as owner.

The question is whether or not Alderson deserves it. The answer is no, and he should be the one heading out the door. Many of the players on this team, whether or not they stayed healthy, were not brought here by Alderson.

Other than Syndergaard and Wheeler, the starting staff is the credit of previous regimes. DeGrom, Matt Harvey, Steven Matz, all brought in previously. Jeurys Familia was also selected by the prior regime.

Mainstays in the 2015 World Series lineup were not on Alderson’s resume either. Lucas Duda was already in the organization. Obviously David Wright was here long before Alderson. The man who led them in the playoffs, Daniel Murphy? Another guy on the list of Omar Minaya, not Sandy Alderson. He did let Murphy go to a rival, though. That has worked out well, huh?

Next: David Wright having surgery again

We all saw what Alderson meant to the A’s back in the Moneyball  days. He also was a stabilizing force in a turbulent time here in New York. Whether they admitted it or not, the Wilpons were mixed up with Bernie Madoff, and they needed someone to come help put their house back in order. Sandy Anderson did a great job there. But the resume, like it or not, is not great, and it is time to go. Not Terry Collins.
