New York Jets: Four players released and four signed to practice squad
The New York Jets have signed four to the practice squad and released four players.
The New York Jets have been active as the waiver wire opened following yesterday’s cuts. Earlier, we announced the signings of TE Will Tye and WR Damore’ea Stringfellow. They added two more players, LB Edmond Robinson and WR Kalif Raymond (per the team website). To make room, they have released LB Freddie Bishop, LB Bruce Carter, TE Jason Vander Laan, and WR-KR Marcus Murphy.
It’s clear that Mike Maccagnan wasn’t happy with the wide receiver group as he added two of them just two days after trading for Jermaine Kearse. The release of Bishop and Carter were a bit of surprise. Bishop outperformed Lorenzo Mauldin who ended up sticking on the 53 man roster. Carter was a guy that brought solid experience to a young group of linebackers. The biggest up grade was Tye for Vander Laan. Being a previous starter, Tye will fit in nicely, especially with Austin Seferian-Jenkins serving his suspension.
Needless to say, the rebuild is on.

Today was also the day that teams could start building their practice squads. It’s an important group of players, even if they don’t ever get to play on Sunday. They supplement the roster and help the regular players prepare during the week. They are a necessary part of the team.
The Jets announced four signings to the practice squad:
- LB Frank Beltre
- OL Ben Braden
- CB Xavier Coleman
- DL Deon Simon
It’s great to see Coleman back with the team. This is the player that was told he would never play again due to a heart condition. He’s the type of guy you root for. Maybe he will get his chance.
Simon was a surprise initial release so it is a solid move to bring him back into the fold. Last year, he posted 23 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
There will be more practice squad players to come. Stay tuned.
