The New York Jets have released Tanner  Purdum, the final link to playoff years gone by.

It’s not often that the life of a long snapper is the topic of the news, but when it’s the New York Jets, anything is possible. That is why today the team has made news regarding their long snapper.

Specifically, it’s long-time snapper Tanner Purdum:

More from Empire Writes Back

Purdum has been with the team since 2010 and was never credited with an errant snap. The new snapper, Thomas Hennessey has a tough act to follow. Purdum is the last player from the 2010 team, meaning he is also the last player to have gone to the playoffs with the Jets.

Taking his position out of it, it’s really not a surprise move. The Jets have been working hard to get younger, and Purdum was one of four players remaining over 30 years of age. Getting younger is not a surprise in 2017 at any position.

It’s more of a surprise that Ross Martin didn’t win the kicking job. As we have discussed, Ross Martin’s long snapper and good friend is Thomas Hennessey. Many assumed that when Hennessey was acquired it was a good sign for Martin. Apparently that wasn’t the case.

Back to Purdum. He was a reliable snapper for seven years. We wish him the best of luck and hope he finds a new team soon.
