New York Giants 2017 Roster Preview: Cornerbacks
By Sean Dyer
Valentino Blake, Michael Hunter, and Donte Deayon
As previously mentioned, Coty Sensabaugh, Trevin Wade, and Leon Hall are no longer members of the New York Giants. In turn, Big Blue is looking for new reserve cornerbacks.
Valentino Blake started 16 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015, totaling 76 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and two interceptions. Blake then joined the Tennessee Titans in 2016, but started only one game and had 42 total tackles, five pass breakups, and no interceptions.
Valentino Blake, formerly known as Antwon Blake, signed a one-year, $885,000 deal with the Giants this offseason to compete for a reserve role.

In New York’s preseason opener, Blake had an interception but looked lost throughout the rest of the game. He was burnt deep a few times and didn’t look w down that Valentino Blake gave up so the big play wasn’t all the cornerback’s fault. I’d still like to see a more consistent game from Blake in the Giants second preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Monday.
Michael Hunter was the most consistent cornerback in New York’s preseason opener and right now, he leads this trio of corners in the fight for a reserve role.
In 2016, Hunter went from the Giants practice squad to the active roster then got released then went back to the practice squad for the rest of the season. Hunter made four tackles in two regular season games but was burnt by Davante Adams for a touchdown before getting cut.
Hunter used his time on the Giants practice squad after his lackluster game action to get adjusted to NFL speed. He is now primed to make the active roster as Big Blue’s fourth corner.
Donte Deayon lacks the size of an NFL corner (5’9″ 158 lb.) and his preseason opener didn’t help his case for a roster spot.
Due to his size, nickel corner is Deayon’s only hope on defense. His best chance at a roster spot is on special teams but he muffed a punt against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week.
Deayon needs to bounce back against Cleveland on Monday. He and Valentino Blake will be battling for the final spot and both need to show more for the rest of the preseason.
