New York Giants 2017 Roster Preview: Linebackers
By Sean Dyer
Final Depth Chart
The New York Giants had a productive linebacking corps in 2016 and they return three of the four guys from their main group. Jonathan Casillas, Keenan Robinson, and Devon Kennard are back while B.J. Goodson replaces (and is likely an improvement over) Kelvin Sheppard.
Big Blue also has plenty of options when it comes to reserve linebackers who will contribute on special teams. Mark Herzlich refuses to go away and I think he gets a roster spot again this year. The Giants just like his special team ability and character way too much to cut him loose.
The final roster spot is tough to call right now. J.T. Thomas’ pay cut helps his chances of sticking around but he just came off the PUP list and will have to prove he’s worth keeping around. Meanwhile, Calvin Munson has been running with his opportunity and would be hard to let go at this stage.
Right now, Calvin Munson has a step up on J.T. Thomas. The Giants have seen what Munson can do (and like what he can do) while Thomas has been on the sidelines. If Thomas can stay healthy and finishes the preseason strong, he could take his roster spot back.
Deontae Skinner is also a solid special teamer but there are just too many guys in front of him on the depth chart.
Tomorrow, we’ll move on to the Giants secondary as we preview Big Blue’s cornerbacks.
