After dropping the first game of the Subway Series on Monday night, the New York Mets tried to bounce back on Tuesday. Despite good performances from two of their young players, the Mets were unable to beat the New York Yankees.

Even though the Mets could not rally back against the Yankees on Tuesday night in the Bronx, their first baseman Dominic Smith did go deep for the first time in his career.

The Yankees were able to get to Mets starter Jacob deGrom somewhat early in the game. Aaron Hicks singled home Ronald Torreyes in the bottom of the third inning. During the following inning, Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run home run, extending the Yankees lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez hit a solo home run off of deGrom. It was starting to look like the Yankees were going to cruise to an easy victory. That started to change in the seventh inning however.

The top of the seventh inning began with Yankees starter Sonny Gray walking Mets third baseman Wilmer Flores. The next batter was Smith, and he hit an opposite-field two-run homer off of Gray. It was Smith’s first career home run.

Unfortunately, the Mets were unable to build up any real momentum after Smith’s home run. They did not get anything else going in the seventh inning, and then went quietly in the eighth.

The Yankees added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning after Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly. They turned things over to Aroldis Chapman to try and close things down in the ninth

inning. Like he has seemed to do a lot lately, Chapman made things interesting.

After getting the first out, Chapman surrendered an infield single to Jose Reyes. Next up was Mets young shortstop Amed Rosario. Champan’s struggles continued, as Rosario hit a two-run home run off of him.

With the Yankees still leading 5-4, Chapman was able to settle down and coax a couple of groundouts for the final two outs of the game. Despite a promising rally by the Mets, the Yankees held onto the lead and got the victory.

For Mets fans, it was nice to see the two young players that their team just called up have an impact on the Subway Series. Smith and Rosario are the future of the Mets, and they showed us why on Tuesday night.

Next: Why the Yankees need this Subway Series

The Subway Series will now shift to Citi Field tonight. Jaime Garcia will take the hill for the Yankees, while Robert Gsellman will make his return from the disabled list and pitch for the Mets. After the way the games at Yankee Stadium went, the Mets could really use a win in front of their home fans tonight.
