One of the more notable free agent signings for the New York Giants this offseason, D.J. Fluker should play a valuable role as Big Blue’s sixth offensive lineman.

Fluker started 59 games over four years with the San Diego Chargers, working at both right guard and right tackle.

As we mentioned, Fluker will compete with John Jerry and Bobby Hart for a starting spot on the right side of the offensive line. In the end, though, I think Fluker ends up as a reserve, being able to fill in at either right guard or right tackle if needed.

The Giants first unofficial depth chart listed Fluker as the backup right guard but there is debate over whether the former first round pick is a better guard or tackle.

New York will likely work D.J. Fluker in at both spots in the preseason because you never know where you’ll need him to play once the season starts.

Brett Jones was a star in the Canadian Football League before signing with the Giants in 2015. In the season before coming to the NFL, Jones was CFL Offensive Lineman of the Year.

More from New York Giants

Jones played in 14 games last year for the Giants as the backup center/guard. The CFL product got a start at left guard when Justin Pugh was injured, but his start lasted just eight snaps before Jones went down with an injury of his own.

The Giants have yet to see the talent that Jones displayed in Canada but will likely give him another year to show his skills. Jones should make the team as Big Blue’s backup center/guard.

Adam Gettis spent most of 2016 on the Giants practice squad but did get one start at left guard when both Pugh and Jones went down.

Gettis is listed as New York’s backup left guard on their unofficial depth chart, however, I think both D.J. Fluker and Brett Jones outrank him when it comes to reserve guards. I don’t see Adam Gettis making the 53-man roster.

Jon Halapio spent most of 2016 on the Giants practice squad after being waived by a number of teams throughout his brief career.

Halapio’s natural position is at guard but he’s worked at center as well. He’d have to leapfrog both Brett Jones and Adam Gettis to make the Giants roster.

Corin Brooks just recently signed with the Giants after they waived undrafted free agent Jessamen Dunker.

Brooks went undrafted as well after playing left tackle at University of Texas-Permian Basin (UTPB).

Brooks is expected to move inside to guard in the NFL but a spot on the Giants 53-man roster seems doubtful. Likely the 14th offensive linemen on the depth chart, it’s just too high of a climb for Corin Brooks.
