The New York Giants have their rookie minicamp this weekend and one player is impressing early on.

Coming into the 2017 NFL Draft, the New York Giants were a team that could have gone in a few different directions. There was some speculation that they might try to improve their offensive line. However, this was a weak class at that position in the first round.

Despite the need on the offensive line, the Giants decided to get a unique weapon for Eli Manning instead. After signing Brandon Marshall to upgrade at wide receiver this offseason, the Giants then added tight end Evan Engram in the first round.

Engram is a unique player at the tight end position, as he has excellent speed. While he might not be a developed blocker yet, he should be able to help the Giants’ passing offense. Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com recently talked about how Engram performed at the rookie minicamp. Here’s what he had to say.

"TE Evan Engram: He’s a good-looking athlete, cut up and fast. He caught the ball well and certainly looked the part of pass-catching tight end. Engram said he wasn’t nervous, and it showed. He seemed to be moving without overthinking. It’s also positive to see the relationship he’s developed with Webb, who is his roommate this weekend and was his teammate at the Senior Bowl. The two have remained in touch (via text) over the past few months and even made flashcards to study the plays together on Thursday night. You can see why the Giants viewed Engram as a clean prospect."

With the Giants being a contender in the NFC in 2017, it will be important for their rookies to perform right away. Due to Eli Manning getting older, the championship window could be closing on the Giants soon.

The tight end position was certainly a need for the Giants, but Engram isn’t a true tight end. However, his ability to catch the football could make him a dynamic weapon for the Giants.
