Safety Marcus Gilchrist

The Jets signed Gilchrist away from the San Diego Chargers during the 2015 offseason. He was part of the revamped secondary that Mike Maccagnan put together that included Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, and Buster Skrine. Cromartie was released last season, and Revis got released earlier this offseason; Gilchrist could be next.

Gilchrist was below average last season with a 77.1 grade from Pro Football Focus. That put him 53rd amongst safeties out of 90 qualifiers. It was better than Pryor, as he was slightly below average in pass coverage and average as a run defender. That isn’t horrible, but can be improved upon.

What is really working against Gilchrist is that he is currently injured. Gilchrist tore his patellar tendon in Week 14 last season. That puts his 2017 season in doubt and could spell the end of his Jets tenure.

According to Spotrac, the Jets have an out from Gilchrist’s contract this offseason. His injury was unfortunate, as he was at least a serviceable player. But, with two new draft picks on the roster, and high ones at that, it would not be surprising to see Gilchrist made a post-June 1st cut, saving the Jets some money and clearing the roster spot of a player that will most likely miss this season.
