Second Round Pick: Raekwon McMillan; Linebacker, Ohio State

Linebacker help is seemingly always on the to-do list for the Giants. This year it is no different. The Giants have been quiet in the linebacker market this far this offseason; their only action was re-signing Keenan Robinson. The Giants could use some more help there and get it with their second round pick.

McMillan is the type of player the Giants look for. He was a team captain at Ohio State and durable. He played in all 41 games at Ohio State, starting 26 the past two seasons. He was also productive, leading the team with 102 tackles last season.

The Giants could use some help at linebacker stopping the run. Robinson struggled against the run last season and Kelvin Sheppard, last season’s middle linebacker, was not retained. McMillan could help fill that void along with last year’s fifth-round pick, B.J. Goodson. McMillan possesses an excellent combination of height, weight, and speed and should be able to carve out a role right away.

He does need some improvement in the passing game, but the Giants would have the luxury of bringing him along slowly in that department. Robinson excels in pass coverage, and the Giants have utilized an extra safety to masquerade as a linebacker in some packages.

There is a chance that McMillan could develop into a three-down linebacker if he could continue making strides in pass defense. Until then, he could help the Giants on early downs as a run stuffer.
