New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo was present at Texas Tech’s Pro Day to watch quarterback Patrick Mahomes II.

The New York Giants have to eventually plan for the future. As much as they would like for Eli Manning to play forever, it won’t happen. They need to put a plan together to start preparing for a future without Manning under center.

The Giants know that a successor for Manning will have to be found sooner or later. They thought Ryan Nassib could fill that role, but the team decided to move on from him this offseason. The quarterback room saw a bit of an overhaul for this season.

Josh Johnson, who signed with the team last September, was retained on a two-year deal. The Giants also signed free agent Geno Smith, formerly of the New York Jets. They will compete for the backup job behind Manning this season.

There have been some discussions about whether or not Smith could fill the role of Manning’s successor. Smith is only 26-years old and has talent. He may not have flourished with the Jets, but part of the blame could be placed on the situation he was put into.

The best chance Smith had to succeed would have been 2015, but he had his jaw broken by a teammate and Ryan Fitzpatrick became the starter, leading the team to 10 wins. Smith is excited about the chance to learn from Manning. If the Giants can coax some of the potential out of Smith that the Jets couldn’t, they could be onto something.

While unlikely given three quarterbacks already being on the roster, the Giants have also not ruled out the possibility of drafting a quarterback. One player to keep an eye on in the 2017 NFL Draft is Texas Tech quarterback, Patrick Mahomes II.

Giants head coach Ben McAdoo was spotted at Texas Tech’s Pro Day on Friday where Mahomes was working out. It is the first time that McAdoo has attended a college Pro Day according to ESPN New York’s Jordan Raanan since becoming the Giants head coach.

Mahomes is a difficult player to evaluate for the draft. Looking at his stats alone, it is clear Mahomes has arm talent. He threw for 5,052 yards and 41 touchdowns, adding 285 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground. But, the system he played in at Texas Tech does not translate to NFL success.

Mahomes played in the Air Raid offense. He was in shotgun every play, minimizing the need to make reads pre-play and go through progressions. There is no denying the arm talent that Mahomes has, but he will have to demonstrate to teams that he has the capabilities to learn an NFL offense and change his style.

Mahomes would make for an intriguing developmental player. He has the skillset to succeed; can that skillset just be reigned in and molded to fit what a team would need in the NFL? The Giants will have to be wowed in workouts and during the draft process to add another quarterback to an already full depth chart.
