The New York Giants multi-year offer to Johnathan Hankins is still on the table.

The biggest question remaining in free agency for the New York Giants is what will Johnathan Hankins do? The Giants have some other holes on the roster, such as running back and linebacker, but Hankins remains at the forefront.

Hankins lack of interest in free agency has been surprising. At 25-years old, Hankins has plenty of good football ahead of him. He struggled last season adjusting to a new position with Damon Harrison in town, but has proven to be an above average defensive tackle in the NFL.

Heading into free agency it was almost a foregone conclusion that Hankins would be gone. He was seeking $10 million annually, a number the Giants would struggle to approach. Other teams around the NFL don’t seem to share that sentiment with Hankins.

Hankins has been met with a cold market. He has generated very little interest, putting the Giants back in play. Just over a week ago, the Giants’ chances of retaining Hankins was placed at 50/50 odds. The longer he remains a free agent, the likelier he was to return to the Giants.

Hankins still remains a free agent and things have not really changed. The only team to show any interest in Hankins has been the Miami Dolphins. ESPN reports that the Detroit Lions could also be players for Hankins who are in need of a run stopper. But, they do not have much money to spend, so he is unlikely to land a lucrative deal with them.

Through all of this, the Giants have had an offer on the table. That offer has not changed. According to Kimberley Jones of NFL Network, the Giants offer for Hankins still remains on the table.

That offer will probably not be there forever. The Giants stated last week that they want an answer from Hankins. There is only so long they can wait for Hankins to make a decision; if he does not like their offer, they will look elsewhere to replace him.

The Giants players want Hankins back. A goal of the Giants coming into the season was to keep the defense intact, and they have done that thus far; they re-signed Jason Pierre-Paul and Keenan Robinson. Hankins remains the last piece that has not yet returned.

At this point in time, Hankins probably wants a one-year deal like Dontari Poe and Benny Logan signed so he can hit free agency again next offseason. That doesn’t fit into the Giants plans, who have to begin prepping to pay Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg, and Odell Beckham Jr. in the coming offseasons.

The Giants have a lot of the leverage here as Hankins has found an ice cold market. Coming back to the Giants would be a good idea. Even if the deal is for two or three years, he would hit free agency again at only 27 or 28 years old. That is young enough for him to cash in again as he will have a great opportunity to improve his stock in what could be a dominant Giants defense.
