New York Giants are on the verge of signing quarterback Geno Smith, pending a physical over the weekend.

The New York Giants have been busy this Friday. They may have agreed to a contract extension with Jason Pierre-Paul, who they franchised tagged. Pierre-Paul has refuted the reports despite many outlets reporting that a deal was done.

One deal that is not being refuted is the one done with Geno Smith. Smith will not be moving far as the former New York Jets quarterback has reportedly agreed to join the Giants as well.

According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, the Giants and Smith have agreed to a deal. He will just have to pass his physical this weekend, and then he is expected to sign Monday.

Smith tore his ACL in Week 7 last season playing with the Jets. If he is able to pass his physical with the Giants, will not be moving far as he will just be switching locker rooms at MetLife Stadium.

It would be fair to believe that Smith is healthy enough to play, or else the Giants would have looked elsewhere to fill their backup quarterback spot. While Eli Manning has been very durable during his NFL career (knock on wood), the need for a backup still persisted with Ryan Nassib hitting free agency.

This is a great landing spot for Smith and a good move by the Giants. While Smith hasn’t lived up to expectations of a second round pick, he brings plenty of experience with him. He made 30 starts with the Jets and appearing in 33 games total. It looks like Smith can be a top tier backup quarterback at worst.

Maybe the Giants have plans of grooming Smith to see if he could be the successor of Manning? The Jets never really put him in a position to succeed as their starting quarterback, so could the Giants coax something out of him that they couldn’t?

First and foremost, Smith has to be healthy and ready to play for that to happen. But, in case Smith is not ready to play, the Giants already have a backup plan in place. In addition to signing Smith, the Giants re-signed quarterback Josh Johnson. Johnson spent last season as the Giants third quarterback and will be brought back again this season.

Johnson’s agent, Doug Hendrickson, shared the news on his Twitter account earlier today.

This could signal a change in philosophy for the Giants. In the past, the Giants have always carried only two quarterbacks; Eli Manning and a backup. From the looks of it, Ben McAdoo wants to change that as Johnson agreed to a two-year deal according to his agent. While the details of Smith’s deal have not yet been released, it is unlikely that Smith will be brought in as only a camp body.

While the details of Smith’s deal have not yet been released, it is unlikely that Smith will be brought in as only a camp body. The Giants could be carrying three quarterbacks for a second consecutive season, a change from the Tom Coughlin days under McAdoo.
