The New York Mets have yet to announce who their Opening Day starter will be. However, Noah Syndergaard wants the ball on that day.

Pitchers and catchers have reported for the New York Mets, and that means the season is right around the corner.

Coming into the 2017 season, the Mets have some big expectations. After reaching the playoffs the past two seasons, the Mets are expected to make the playoffs once again. This offseason, the Mets were able to re-sign outfielder Yoenis Cespedes which was their top priority. The ownership has opened their wallets, and now the Mets are expected to win.

One of the reasons why the Mets were unable to accomplish their goals in 2016 was because of injuries. Their starting rotation took a lot of hits, as pretty much everyone was injured. One of the pitchers that were able to stay off the disabled list was Noah Syndergaard.

After a great season in 2016, Syndergaard wants to be the leader of this staff now. For him, that means starting on Opening Day.

"“I really wouldn’t say I’m the leader of the staff. I think we’re all leaders in our own way and we’re all pulling for one another,” said Syndergaard via ESPN.com.“It’s like a brotherhood within the team. It’s really something cool to be a part of.”“As far as Terry mentioning [the Opening Day starter nod], that’s just a huge honor to me. I’m here to answer the call,” said Syndergaard via ESPN.com, I’m here to fill that job.”"

Last season, Syndergaard totaled a 14-9 record, 2.60 ERA, and 218 strikeouts. Even though Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey might have had success before Syndergaard, he is the one who appears like he wants to be the ace of this staff.
