New York Giants Running Back Shane Vereen Re-Injures Triceps
New York Giants running back Shane Vereen re-injured his triceps against the Detroit Lions and looks like he could be lost for the remainder of the season.
The New York Giants backfield has struggled to produce much throughout the entire 2016 season. The offensive line has been a problem, but the Giants don’t have the most talented running backs either. The Giants came into the season with plenty of depth at running back, each playing a specific role.
Rashad Jennings and Paul Perkins were expected to handle early-down work. Shane Vereen would handle passing downs. Bobby Rainey and Orleans Darkwa would be sprinkled in as necessary and contribute on special teams. It is a good strategy on paper, but on the field it was one the Giants never got to use much.
Jennings and Vereen both battled injuries early in the season. Jennings sat out Week 3-5, all Giants losses. Vereen filled in admirably in Week 3 against the Washington Redskins, but tore his triceps during the game.
The Giants would be without Vereen until Week 14 against the Dallas Cowboys as he was their IR player designated to return. The Giants were hoping that his return would help jumpstart the offense as he would bring an added dimension and weapon to the passing game for Eli Manning.
The return was short-lived, as Vereen has re-injured his triceps according to Art Stapleton of The Record and USA Today.
In addition to Vereen, the Giants lost Janoris Jenkins in the game. Jenkins was kneed in the back by Trevin Wade and the Giants feared internal damage. He looks to have come away lucky, but the same cannot be said for Vereen.

Vereen’s injury looks to be severe, as he re-tore the triceps muscle. When asked about the injury head coach Ben McAdoo said, “Yeah, Shane re-injured his triceps. It’s unfortunate. He worked his tail off to get back to where he was, and I’m disappointed for Shane.”
It was a rough return for Vereen from the IR. Against the Cowboys, he suffered a concussion on the second drive, on his first touch of the game. He was able to get cleared in time to play the Detroit Lions, but suffered the triceps injury again. Vereen only made two catches for nine yards against the Lions.
It is a tough blow for the Giants and Vereen. He worked hard to get back on the field to help the team for a playoff push, but will once again be sidelined. It is likely that he misses the remainder of the season after re-tearing his triceps.

A decision has not yet been made in regard to his roster spot according to McAdoo, as they will consult the training staff before making a final decision. If he does miss the remainder of the season, it will be Jennings and Perkins manning the backfield. Rainey could also be worked in occasionally in passing downs as he has been throughout the season in relief of Jennings and Perkins.
