The New York Jets were pummeled by the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night as Bryce Petty was forced from the game because of injury.

The New York Jets had a rough night on Saturday against the Miami Dolphins. The Jets played a tough first half, but were blasted in the second half as the Dolphins ended up blowing them out, 34-10.

Things got off to a solid start. Bryce Petty found Robby Anderson for a 40-yard touchdown in the first drive of the game, giving New York a 7-0 lead. But, things quickly went downhill after that.

On the second drive, Petty was crushed by Cameron Wake. He fumbled from the sack, and Ndamukong Suh recovered the fumble. That was a sign of things to come the remainder of the night as the Dolphins teed off on the helpless Petty.

The Jets offensive line was without many contributors. Nick Mangold was placed on IR last week, and Breno Giacomini joined him this past week. Ryan Clady was injured earlier in the season and tonight the offensive line looked like a unit in need of a lot of help. As a result, Petty was a sitting duck most of the evening.

The Dolphins racked up the hits on Petty as the game went on. They registered three sacks in the game and eight quarterback hits. The last one was a vicious hit from Wake and Suh, something similar to what happened to Adam Sandler’s character Paul Crewes in The Longest Yard.

The Jets said that Petty lost his breath, as the wind was knocked out of him. He attempted to warm up on the sidelines, but something was not right and he spent the remainder of the game in the locker room.

More from New York Jets

On the evening, Petty completed 20-for-36 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The interceptions were pretty poor throws, as Petty hit Wake square in the second quarter and then badly underthrew Anderson in the third quarter.

It was a step back for Petty, who started the game poorly against the San Francisco 49ers last week but closed well. He carried that over to the beginning of the game but did not finish it well at all. It was not all his fault, as the offensive line gave him no help.

But Petty showed some of the limitations that he has. He struggled with accuracy again, didn’t pick up some blitz reads and would sometimes hold onto the ball too long. It is nice to see him trying to keep a play alive and make something happen, but sometimes you have to realize it is better to live for another play.

When Petty was knocked out, it was Ryan Fitzpatrick called on to finish the game. If Petty is unable to play next week, could we see Fitzpatrick once again get a chance under center? Or could we see the Jets turn to rookie Christian Hackenberg? Neither make for a very appealing choice, as the Jets quarterback situation is one of the uglier ones in the NFL currently.
