The New York Jets select Alabama’s outside linebacker Tim Williams with the No.6 overall pick in Todd McShay’s first 2017 mock draft.

The New York Jets were officially eliminated from the playoffs recently, meaning their 2017 preparations are underway. The Jets have an older roster that is in need of a youth infusion and could have plenty of new faces next season.

New York has a lot of work to do with the roster, but the quickest way to adding new, young talent is through the NFL Draft. Currently holding a record of 4-9, the Jets have a chance to add an impact player at the top of the 2017 NFL Draft. While the No.1 pick won’t be in play, the Jets will more than likely be selecting somewhere between No.6-10.

A player selected that high is expected to come in and contribute right away. It is a chance for a team to add an impact player that can help turn the tide of the franchise so they are no longer selecting that high because of a poor record.

In his first mock draft, Todd McShay has the Jets adding just that type of player. Using ESPN’s Football Power Index, McShay determined the draft order and the Jets end up with the sixth overall pick. With the No.6 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, McShay has the Jets selecting Alabama outside linebacker Tim Williams.

Here is what McShay has to say about Williams heading to the Jets.

"Williams is disruptive — if a little inconsistent — with excellent first-step quickness off the edge. Nearly all of his tackles for loss this season came against SEC opponents (14 of the 15.5 total). A pass-rusher could very well be near the top of the Jets’ needs by the time April rolls around."

Selecting another linebacker may not be something fans agree with. The Jets used two high picks in the 2016 draft on linebackers, taking Darron Lee out of Ohio State in round one and Jordan Jenkins out of Georgia in round three. Using another first round pick in a linebacker may seem like overkill, but the Jets need to add talent to that unit.

More from New York Jets

The Jets believe they have a replacement for the aging David Harris in Lee, but they have gotten nothing out of their pass rush. They had hoped 2015 third round pick Lorenzo Mauldin would jump-start the pass rush, but he has only 2.5 in 2016. Jenkins only has .5 in his rookie campaign, while Lee has one.

Williams should be able to step in immediately as a factor on third down as a pass rusher. Pass rushing is his strongest trait, as his ability to drop back in coverage is relatively unknown as he is not seen doing it much on tape. He shows a lot of promise in his ability to get after the quarterback and that is something the Jets need.

The Jets currently rank tied for the second least sacks in the NFL this season with 22 through 13 games. That kind of production will not cut it, especially with how many resources the Jets have poured into their defensive front in recent years.

Williams would add some juice to that aspect of the defense. Fixing a team that has so many holes will take time and Williams would be a good building block addition.
