Quarterback

For the third season in a row, the Jets might very well be taking a quarterback in the NFL Draft. This season, Ryan Fitzpatrick was terrible in his second season as the starter. Even though Fitzpatrick was brought back this season, there were never any plans for him to be the long-term answer.

In the past two drafts, the Jets have drafted Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. Petty is getting a chance to prove what he can do for the Jets for the rest of the 2016 season. After being picked as a project from Baylor, Petty will be attempting to prove that he is capable of being a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Despite taking Hackenberg in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, there are no indications that we will see him active at all this season. With limited time in the preseason, it is impossible to know where Hackenberg is in his development. It has certainly been a disappointment for the franchise that Hackenberg doesn’t appear to be anywhere close to being ready to be a starter.

Due to both young quarterbacks being unknowns for the Jets as of now, they will certainly entertain the idea of drafting another one in the 2017 NFL Draft. Finding a franchise quarterback will continue to be the No.1 priority for the Jets. However, draft position could dictate whether or not they are able to get the franchise quarterback they so desperately desire.
