New York Giants running back Shane Vereen is expected to make his return against the Dallas Cowboys as he was activated today.

The New York Giants have been dealing with a ton of injuries all season. Injuries have been a problem in recent seasons as they just have not had the depth to overcome the losses. This season they have been able to weather the storm a little better, as they have an 8-4 record.

They will once again be tested as All-Pro defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul will be out for what looks like the remainder of the season. But, the Giants will be getting some help on the offensive side of the ball.

Running back Shane Vereen was thought to be out for the season when he originally injured his triceps against the Washington Redskins Week 3. But, rumors popped up about a month later that he may be the Giants player designated for return from IR.

It looks like those rumors were right. According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN New York and Art Stapleton of USA Today, Vereen is going to be active this week in a huge matchup against the Dallas Cowboys barring any setbacks.

This will be a huge boon to the Giants offense. Their running game has been in shambles all season and he should be able to help that out. Where he will really help is in the passing game.

More from New York Giants

Eli Manning has been under siege almost all season. The offensive line hasn’t given up many sacks, but he has been under pressure constantly. Vereen can help in that area, as he is as good as they come in the backfield in passing situations. Vereen was signed originally to help in the passing game as a free agent from the New England Patriots and will undoubtedly be asked to do that again.

Rashad Jennings should assume the role as the early back. When the Giants found success running the ball at the end of the 2015 season it was with Jennings being the bell cow. They should have him handle that with Vereen mixed in and handling passing duties.

Rookie Paul Perkins has the potential to help out, but in the midst of a playoff race, the Giants have to go with their best players. Perkins hasn’t shown enough to warrant a role over either Jennings or Vereen.

Ben McAdoo will probably want to keep him involved in some capacity, as Vereen will be eased into action. But, once Vereen is able to go, it should be he and Jennings carrying the load from here on out.
