The offense once again was a mess for the Giants. The offensive line was unable to provide any protection as Ereck Flowers struggled mightily with penalties. One of his penalties, albeit a questionable one, came in the endzone for a safety and was the first points of the game.
Things didn’t get any better from there. Eli Manning had happy feet in the pocket and missed on a couple of throws. The tide of the game was changed with his interception throw to Lawrence Timmons inside the five-yard line. It was a huge momentum shift as it was a six, if not 10, point swing in favor of Pittsburgh. It was a big blow as the Giants offense was never able to get anything going and missing out on those points proved disastrous.
There was once again no balance in New York’s offensive attack. They abandoned the run game early on, as they had only 14 rush attempts compared to 39 pass attempts. The results weren’t great, but they were better than normal as Paul Perkins ran for 38 yards on seven attempts and Rashad Jennings had 19 on six carries.
That was nowhere near what the Steelers got from Le’Veon Bell. Bell was great in the running game and as a pass catcher as he led the Steelers offense. The Giants did a good job of slowing down Antonio Brown, but Ben Roethlisberger picked them apart with his other weapons at his disposal.
The Giants defense did their best to contain the Steelers offense, but they got no support from the Giants offense. It resulted in a bad showing and an ugly loss for the Giants, snapping their six-game winning streak.
Three Stars
WR Odell Beckham Jr., Giants — The Giants offense was not good against the Steelers but Beckham Jr. played well. He got no help from the referees as they missed some holding and pass interference, but Beckham Jr. kept his emotions in check and didn’t blow up and get any penalties against him. He had a questionable offensive pass interference against him, but he handled it well. He finished the game with 100 yards on 10 receptions, the first time since October 16th against the Baltimore Ravens that Beckham Jr. had at least 100 yards.
RB Le’Veon Bell, Steelers — Bell is the best overall running back in the NFL. He shows outstanding patience as a runner, allowing his blockers to set up, and is an outstanding receiver. He showcased that against the Giants, rushing for 118 yards on 29 carries to go along with six receptions for 64 yards. The Giants made him work for his production but he still got the yardage when he needed it and kept drives going all game.
TE Ladarius Green, Steelers — The Giants have been burned by tight ends at times this season and it continued against the Steelers. Green absolutely torched them for some big gains and was a difference maker. He caught six passes for 110 yards and one touchdown. The Giants let him run freely up the seam too often and he took advantage. He ran a great route on his touchdown and left Landon Collins in the dust.
