Howard had a strong game with 18 points and 18 rebounds but it didn’t feel like he had a huge impact on the game. His stats look good, but they were relatively empty stats.
It set the tone for the afternoon as the Knicks brought it on the defensive end of the court. The Hawks came into the game as the second-most efficient team in the NBA but were unable to get anything going against the Knicks. Atlanta was held to 40 percent shooting on the afternoon and made only 28.6 percent of their three-point attempts.
Three-point shooting was one of the keys to the game we pointed out and the Knicks won that area. While the Hawks struggled, the Knicks shot the ball well from deep, making 10 on the game on 38.5 percent shooting.
New York was also able to win the rebounding battle 50-48. Howard had a big rebounding game but the Knicks were able to counter it with solid team rebounding. Kristaps Porzingis led the way with 11, with O’Quinn, Hernangomez, Carmelo Anthony, and Courtney Lee all chipping in at least five.
Three Stars
F Carmelo Anthony, Knicks — Anthony’s defense has been questioned throughout the season, but today he set the tone for the Knicks. He was flying around on defense helping on rotations and looked spry today. He also had it going offensively. He led the way with 31 points on an efficient 12-22 from the field, making 4-of-8 from deep and all three free throws. He also added seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
PF Paul Millsap, Hawks — Millsap does a little bit of everything for Atlanta and it showed against the Knicks. He stuffed the stat sheet as he had an impact in all facets of the game. He scored a team-high 19 points with seven rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks. He had zero turnovers and continues to perform for the Hawks all over the court.
PF Kristaps Porzingis, Knicks — Porzingis continues to showcase the development in his game. He had a tough matchup tonight against a stingy Hawks defense but took advantage when he could. The Hawks tried to hide Tim Hardaway Jr. on him at times, which is easy pickings for Porzingis. He finished the game with another double-double, scoring 19 points with 11 rebounds.
