The New York Giants shot themselves in the foot continuously in their home opener but sent the fans home happy with a win over the New Orleans Saints.

15. Final. 16. 31. 13

The New York Giants were able to come away from their home opener at MetLife Stadium against the New Orleans Saints with a hard fought victory. The Giants didn’t make things easy, as they constantly hurt themselves with self-inflicted wounds. But, at the end of the day, they got the victory and that is what matters most.

After the teams combined for 102 points in last season’s matchup with 13 passing touchdowns, they combined for only 29 and one this time around. Both defenses showed up more than anyone would have guessed, holding the explosive offenses in check.

The Giants were able to overcome three turnovers in the game, as Eli Manning, Shane Vereen, and Victor Cruz all suffered fumbles. It ended up not costing the Giants, as the Saints offense was unable to get anything going consistently.

More from New York Giants

The biggest play came in the first half for the first points of the game. The Giants would block a field goal attempt, which was returned by Janoris Jenkins for a touchdown. It would be the only touchdown that the Giants would score in the game, and give them some momentum.

They were unable to sustain that momentum though as the Saints were able to get a field goal before halftime. The Giants then missed a field goal on their first drive of the second half, as penalties stalled a promising drive.

It was a game of missed opportunities for both teams, as the quarterbacks had solid games but couldn’t produce many points. Despite the lower than expected scoring game, there were still some players that stood out above the rest.

Three Stars

CB Janoris Jenkins, Giants — Jenkins provided the biggest score for the Giants, returning the blocked field goal for a touchdown. In addition, he led the team in tackles with eight, one of which was a tackle for loss. He also added two passes defended as he has been well worth the price the Giants paid in free agency for his services.

WR Sterling Shepard, Giants — The rookie wide receiver took full advantage of a shorthanded Saints secondary. He put up career highs across the board, hauling in all eight of his targets for 117 yards. He is quickly becoming a reliable target for Eli Manning all over the field.

P Thomas Morstead, Saints — Special teams are an important facet of the game, and the Saints got a great game from their punter. Morstead had seven punts, averaging 54.7 yards per punt. He pinned the Giants inside the 20-yard line three times and did well with directional punting; Dwayne Harris had only one return for nine yards.
