New York Giants wide receiver Tavarres King has put together strong performances throughout the offseason and should have a roster spot locked up as a result.

The New York Giants first team offense has been abysmal throughout the preseason. They have been on the field for about four quarters, and the statistics are ugly. In that time, the first team offense led by Eli Manning has managed only 88 yards and four first downs.

It is only the preseason, so there isn’t yet reason to truly panic. But, when rehearsing for the regular season you would like to see a little bit more production. There has yet to be any cohesion or chemistry on the field, causing some ugly production.

While there won’t be any changes made for the time being, there is one player that has stood out. Wide receiver Tavarres King came to the team fighting for a roster spot and Saturday’s performance against the New York Jets should have wrapped him up a spot on the final 53-man roster.

The Giants had a number of wide receivers fighting for a roster spot during the offseason. King was joined by Roger Lews, Darius Powe, and Anthony Dable for maybe one roster spot. With Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz, and Sterling Shepard firmly entrenched atop the depth chart, and Dwayne Harris and Geremy Davis relatively safe because of their special team prowess, there wasn’t much room at wide receiver on the roster.

Against the odds, King has essentially forced himself into the conversation for a roster spot, and potentially No.4 receiver duties. King had strong performances in the spring that carried into training camp and the summer. Those reps are now translating to the field, where King has easily been the best receiver the Giants have had on the field.

Saturday was a coming out party for the 26-year old King, who single-handily beat the Jets by himself. King was essentially the only bright spot for the Giants offensively, as he did a little bit of everything.

King was the leading receiver, as he pulled in two receptions for 38 yards and two touchdowns. He was also the top rusher for the Giants on the evening, taking an end-around for 20 yards. That run set up his first touchdown reception, a 27-yard reception on a route he turned his defender around on.

King has consistently been performing and the only one taking advantage of his chances on the field. He has been head and shoulders above the rest of the competition and someone that has stood out on a daily basis.

It should translate to another chance on a 53-man roster for the former fifth-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2013. If he continues performing as he has, he could push for some reps with the first team; the Giants use three-receiver sets as much as any team in the NFL.
