Quarterback Brett Favre will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Green Bay Packers. What did he think about his time with the New York Jets?

It has been an amazing career for Brett Favre as a quarterback in the NFL, and he is certainly well-deserving of being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There are a lot of accolades that Favre has accomplished, as he is second all-time in passing touchdowns behind Peyton Manning to name one of his many accomplishments.

Many believed that Favre would play his entire career with the Green Bay Packers but after a few years of leaving the team hanging about whether or not he would retire, the Packers would move in a new direction with Aaron Rodgers. Favre decided that he wished to keep playing, and he was traded to the New York Jets in 2008.

There was a lot of excitement when the Jets were able to acquire Favre, as the team was poised to be contenders for a Super Bowl that season. Despite an 8-3 start, the Jets finished with a 9-7 record and missed the playoffs, largely because of Favre being injured and ineffective. When asked about his year with the Jets, Favre had some surprising things to say.

“Well, I threw six touchdowns in one game — yippee,” Favre said to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. “It’s the only time I ever did it. But I’ll say this — and I’m not an excuse guy — but before I tore my bicep I was playing pretty good and we were 9-3, I think, and not hitting on all cylinders. But I thought there was tremendous upside. I think our last good game was against New England on a Thursday night in New England, which we won, and I played really well.

The torn bicep for Favre was certainly the reason that he struggled, as there was a noticeable drop in his production. In the final five weeks of the season, Favre didn’t total over 250 passing yards in any of the games, and he also threw just two touchdown passes with nine interceptions.

“It went downhill from there as the bicep got progressively worse, which ultimately ended up in surgery. I would have liked to have seen how it ended up had I not had a torn bicep because at one point I wanted to remove myself from playing because I’d throw it over there and it would end up over there. I just felt like the value of what a quarterback does — there’s a higher value to that because you handle the ball every time — and I felt like I was doing more harm than good.

The Jets haven’t made the Super Bowl since Joe Namath led them there in 1969. That 2008 team might have been the Jets’ best opportunity to make it to the big game if not for Favre getting injured.

“Then when I look at that year, that’s my regret, that maybe I didn’t just remove myself from it all together. I mentioned that to [head coach] Eric Mangini and [offensive coordinator] Brian Schottenheimer. I don’t know if they realized the magnitude of the injury. I just hate knowing and thinking that much of those losses were the result of my lack of being able to make plays. That’s what I think about that season — what could have been.”

The next two seasons, the Jets would make the AFC Championship Game with Mark Sanchez as their quarterback. If those teams had a healthy Favre playing under center, he might have two more Super Bowl appearances on his resume. It has certainly been a great career for Favre, but his one year with the Jets still has left him thinking about what it could have been.
