– Ryan Strome
Assuming that the Islanders reach a deal with restricted free agent Ryan Strome, he will be another candidate to have a breakout season this coming year. Strome emerged as a great young player for the Islanders in the 2014-15 season, as he totaled 50 points on 17 goals and 33 assists. Most impressively that season was his +23 +/- when on the ice.
This past season, there were a lot of expectations for Strome to play at a similar level to the one he did in the 14-15 season, but instead, Strome really struggled. Last season, he totaled 28 points in 71 games, and instead of a +23 rating when he was on the ice, it decreased to -9. Strome’s struggles actually led to him spending some time in the AHL last season, as the Islanders didn’t seem to be patient with him struggling in the NHL.
As shown in the 14-15 season, Strome has a lot of talent and is still just 23-years-old. He is expected to be playing just at center this season, which might help him get back to the production we saw two seasons ago. A more effective Strome next season will be a big help for the Islanders to make up the scoring lost by the departures of Nielsen and Okposo.
