The Brooklyn Nets added another backcourt option, signing undrafted free agent point guard Yogi Ferrell, formally of Indiana University.

The Brooklyn Nets had a busy draft night, as they ended up making two selections after a couple of trades. The Nets acquired the 20th overall pick from the Indiana Pacers in a deal for Thaddeus Young, selecting Caris LeVert out of Michigan. The Nets then traded up for the No.42 pick with the Utah Jazz to get the rights to hometown product Isaiah Whitehead.

The Nets haven’t stopped adding to their backcourt, as they have also signed undrafted free agent Yogi Ferrell. According to Michael Scotto, the Nets and Ferrell agreed to a partially guaranteed, Summer League deal.

Ferrell will be given a chance to play his way into a training camp invite with the Nets at Summer League for the Nets. The Nets’ will get their summer league underway July 9th in Las Vegas. While Ferrell will probably be upset he wasn’t selected, being a free agent isn’t always a bad thing as you get to select where you will be playing, and the Nets are a good landing spot for him.

The Nets are in the midst of a major rebuild, evident by the Young trade earlier in the day. The point guard spot is wide open, as Jarrett Jack has a team option the Nets may move on from, Shane Larkin has a player-option he is expected to decline and Donald Sloan is a free agent. That means there should be plenty of minutes available this season, something Ferrell could take advantage of.

More from Brooklyn Nets

The Nets will have a ton of cap space available, and some of that will undoubtedly be used on a veteran point guard. But, Ferrell has a good chance of making it to training camp with the Nets and potentially making their final roster.

Ferrell is undersized, standing 6-feet tall and weighing 178 pounds, which is the only true knock against him. He needs to add some strength still, but there is a lot to like about Ferrell. He is a true point guard, and improved every season that he was at Indiana.

He possesses a high basketball IQ, averaging 5.6 assists per game and only 2.5 turnovers per game despite always having the ball in his hands. He also has improved his jump shot every year at school, improving his three-point shooting percentage every season as a Hoosier and shooting percentage overall.

Ferrell saw his stats improve virtually across the board every year at Indiana, and shows the improvement that a player can make if he stays in school. Ferrell was a unanimous All-Big Ten selection as a senior, averaging 17.3 points, 5.6 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

Ferrell will have his first shot at showcasing his talent to the Nets, and other NBA teams, at the Las Vegas Summer League where he will try and land a training camp invite. If that happens, he will then fight for a spot on someone’s opening night roster.
