The Brooklyn Nets began the reshaping of their organization when they hired Sean Marks away from the San Antonio Spurs to be their general manager. Now that he has his head coach in place in former Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks assistant coach Kenny Atkinson, the Nets are building the foundation for a new direction and future.

But there is one thing missing from this future; building blocks. The Nets have one of the least attractive rosters in the NBA currently as they lack many assets with trades from the previous regime ravaging their draft pick stock. They will find it difficult to add young talent via the draft with so many picks not being theirs, so free agency will have to be the track that the route takes.

The one area that the Nets need to target as an upgrade this offseason is the point guard position. They worked a buyout with Deron Williams last season and had very little in the way of a replacement, especially after Jarrett Jack went down with a torn ACL. With Jack probably out of the picture, the Nets need to find a point guard this offseason to lead the team.

More from Brooklyn Nets

Atkinson has shown in the past that he can help get a point guard on track, and the Nets are hoping that he can do that again for him. There isn’t much top-flight talent available at the point guard spot this offseason, as Mike Conley and Rajon Rondo are the cream of the crop.

The Nets will probably not be in the running for either of those players, but there are some players that they could probably sign to cheaper, shorter deals that want to improve their value and hit the open market again as soon as possible once the salary cap is expected to boom.
