If Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn’t re-sign with the New York Jets, what veteran quarterback would be a good option to help the younger players grow?

The contract situation between the New York Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick has resulted in a lot of headaches for fans of the Jets, and it has clearly become a distraction. Last season, Fitzpatrick was acquired to be a veteran backup for Geno Smith. As a result of a locker room fight, Smith suffered a broken jaw, and in stepped Fitzpatrick as the new starting quarterback.

As the starting quarterback, Fitzpatrick was able to have a great season for the Jets, as he set the single-season record for passing touchdowns, and the team had a 10-6 record. While it was a good season overall for Fitzpatrick, he was unable to beat the Buffalo Bills in the final week of the season to secure a playoff spot for the Jets. This failure by Fitzpatrick could be one of the reasons why he hasn’t been offered more money by the Jets in the negotiations.

Big money was handed out this offseason to quarterbacks, as Sam Bradford of the Philadelphia Eagles set the price tag high for quarterbacks. Statistically, Fitzpatrick had a better season than Bradford, but the money he received was a ridiculous amount.

The Jets currently have three quarterbacks on their roster with Smith, Bryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg, but none of those three have much experience in the NFL. Smith is the only one of the three to have started a game in the NFL, which creates a need for some sort of veteran quarterback to be added to the roster.

Excluding the possible return of Fitzpatrick, here are some veteran options for the Jets at the quarterback position.
