New York Mets Rumors: The Mets could be without David Wright for an extended period of time, as he was diagnosed with a herniated disk in his neck.

Recent New York Mets rumors conern injured third baseman David Wright, and they are not positive. Wright, who has been battling spinal stenosis all season, began experiencing neck pain this weekend. He has missed the last three games, including this afternoon’s victory over the Chicago White Sox, and we finally have a diagnosis as to why.

It was revealed, by Wright himself, following Monday’s game that he has a herniated disk in his neck. As a result, it is looking more and more likely that Wright will be sidelined for a lot longer than he or the team were hoping for, and a disabled list stint is possible.

Wright is scheduled to meet with doctors again Tuesday after meeting with them over the weekend and being prescribed some anti-inflammatory pills. The meeting will determine how well that medication is working, and whether or not Wright will need more medicine to help the healing process.

The pills given to him over the weekend are said to need at least 48-hours before they take full effect, but things have not been going great for Wright since. Wright said that he has seen only a slight improvement since taking the medicine, adding, “I’m hopeful, keeping my fingers crossed, that this medication kicks in a little bit, or that there’s something else we can do to kind of expedite the process.”

More from Mets Rumors

Wright is unsure how or when the injury occurred, and he is unsure if it is related to the back injury he is already dealing with and the subsequent shoulder soreness he was feeling. But, he knew there was something wrong, saying, “I’ve woken up plenty with a stiff neck from sleeping on it wrong, but this is different,” Wright said. “This certainly lingered a little bit longer than a stiff neck does, so you’ve just got to treat that.”

While the Mets are still holding out hope that Wright will not need to go on the DL, that is something manager Terry Collins is concerned about happening.

“Yes, I’m concerned about David Wright possibly [going on the disabled list],” Collins said Monday morning. “The condition he’s been playing in and the condition he’s in right now, yeah, I’m concerned about it. I know this guy plays with a lot of discomfort. He always has. When he can’t play, he’s hurt. So yeah, I’m concerned about it.”

The Mets are already staring in the face of an extended absence for first baseman Lucas Duda, who is dealing with a stress fracture in his back. As a result the Mets’ depth was already being tested, and it will be futher tested if Wright is sidelined.

Veteran James Loney, whom the Mets acquired over the weekend from the San Diego Padres, should be able to take over at first base for the time being. If he handles himself there, the Mets could turn to Wilmer Flores, Eric Campbell and Ty Kelly at third base to replace Wright.

While some of those options are underwhelming at best, the Mets will have to make due with what they have. Wright’s injury is unfortunate, but the Mets knew they wouldn’t be able to rely on him on an everyday basis, so they should have some sort of plan in place.
