New York Mets Rumors: Could Matt Harvey miss Opening Night against the Kansas City Royals because of an undisclosed injury?

More from Empire Writes Back

New York Mets rumors about the regular season thus far have revolved around which players may or may not make the final 25-man roster for Opening Day. It is something fans like debating back and forth, but the most recent Mets rumor is not one that anyone wants to hear. If Matt Harvey is unable to start on Opening Night against the Kansas City Royals, who may take his place?

That is the debate that could take place in the coming days, as Harvey’s status for opening night as just come into question. Harvey was slated to toe the rubber at Kauffman Stadium against the Royals on Sunday Night Baseball in five days, but he may not be able to make that start anymore because of an undisclosed injury.

The Mets are being mum about the situation, as general manager Sandy Alderson had very little to offer about the situation. “It’s a non-baseball medical issue that we have to address,” Alderson said after Monday’s 3-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. “It came up this morning as far as I know. There will be some follow-up tests and consultation that will take place over the next couple of days.”

Alderson also added that it is too early to tell the severity of the issue that Harvey is dealing with, but it is bad enough that he will be forced from his Grapefruit League start on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins. That was expected to be Harvey’s last tuneup for the regular season, but now plans look like they may have to change. Alderson also said that Harvey could be sent back to New York for additional tests on whatever is ailing him.

“It’s way too premature for us to be discussing anything related to Opening Day,” Alderson said. “I understand Opening Day is not too far away, but we’re dealing with tomorrow, and we should know something more tomorrow — or the next day. But right now he’s not pitching tomorrow. That’s kind of where the story ends.”

If the Mets were going to suffer an injury anywhere on their roster and be able to withstand it, the starting pitching is the place they would want it to be. Even if Harvey is unable to start Opening Day, they can turn to Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz or Bartolo Colon. The Mets have an embarrassment of riches on their pitching staff that teams only dream of assembling.

While it is encouraging that Harvey is not dealing with a problem to his surgically repaired elbow, or a shoulder injury that could sideline him for a lengthy period of time, it would be unfortunate if he is unable to make the Opening Night start Sunday against the Royals.
