The New York Giants have lost underachieving wide receiver Rueben Randle in free agency, as the former second round pick signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

More from Empire Writes Back

The New York Giants free agency got off to a bang, as they greatly upgraded their defense with a few major signings along the defensive line and in the secondary. There is still some work to do for Big Blue, as the linebacking corps could use some talent, as well as the offensive line. Wide Receiver was a need for the Giants going into the offseason as well, and now that need has been cemented.

The Giants lost wide receiver Rueben Randle as a free agent on Wednesday, as the four-year veteran signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. The news was first reported by Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.

The deal is worth $1.025 million, but Randle has a chance to up his earnings if he can hit some incentive plateaus. If he hits those plateaus, Randle could earn over $3 million this season. Of the contract, $500,000 is guaranteed. In addition to the Eagles, Randle had interest from the St. Louis Rams, but ultimately decided upon his former NFC East division rival.

More from New York Giants

Randle spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Giants, as they selected him in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2012. He never quite did live up to the expectations the Giants had for him, as he was never able to develop consistency despite playing next to some dynamic receivers taking attention away from him. Despite playing next opposite players such as Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Odell Beckham Jr., Randle was never able to fully put things together; he would show flashes but that was not enough to keep him around with the Giants.

Randle did catch a career-high eight touchdowns last season, but still left much to be desired. He only caught 57 passes, too often becoming invisible on the field, and finishing with 797 yards. It was a disappointing outcome, as Randle looked like a serious breakout candidate after finishing 2014 with 71 receptions and 938 yards, including a monster finish to the season with 132 and 158 yards in the final two games of the season.

Randle, who will be 25 years old in May, will now move on to Philadelphia where he will look to gain the consistency that failed him with the Giants. He has had success against the Eagles in his career, catching 30 passes for 493 yards and five touchdows in eight games. If he was able to do that against more teams, there is a good chance that the Giants would have kept him around.

Unfortunately he was never able to do that, and will now be moving on. Expect the Giants to continue scouring the free agent market for a veteran compliment to Beckham on the outside, but there is a chance that the Giants could try and address the issue in the upcoming NFL Draft.
